More stability for children of mentally ill parents thanks to mentors.

AMSOC e.V. - More stability for children of mentally ill parents thanks to mentors.

To be able to enjoy a healthy development children need an unfailing, trustworthy relationship to at least one adult. The Berlin youth welfare organisation Ambulante Sozialpädagogik Charlottenburg e.V. (AMSOC) offers a mentorship for children who don’t have such a person. These children often grow up with single mothers who are mentally ill, and due to this illness they are not in a position to give their children the stability and security they require. From time to time the mothers are simply not there for their children because they have to undergo clinical therapy. To ensure that these children are taken care of, AMSOC organises volunteer mentors, so that there is always someone who is there for them.   The mentors provide a long-term, reliable relationship and are there for the children, whenever they need them. They get together with their “children” at least once a week and in times of crisis take the children into their own homes. Thanks to the support from the Auerbach Foundation, AMSOC can recruit and train new volunteers and  arrange for the supervision of these mentors. And with PR work, AMSOC can also draw attention to these children’s situation and ensure that help is provided in good time.
