Sustainable protection against abuse – understanding the reasons.

Forensic Institute East Switzerland - Sustainable protection against abuse – understanding the reasons.

Research findings show that many sexual offenders commit not only one offence, but a number of criminal felonies. Due to their physical inferiority, children and youths are not in a position to protect themselves alone. Therefore, the efforts made, so that these young people can defend themselves against sexual violence, are simply not enough. There must also be a programme for offenders so that the original problem – the offender’s behaviour – can be worked on. Against this background the work with the offenders is essential to protect the young victims from sexual violence on a sustainable basis and to break the cycle of abuse.   The Forensic Institute East Switzerland – in cooperation with the German Association for Prevention and Intervention – has developed a new training and further education programme. Here the basic knowledge on various topics of child protection  – in particular work with the offenders – and existing professional skills can be broadened. In the course of their professional life, the participants can protect many children and youths from sexual violence and they can pass on their knowledge and skills in the various facilities where they work, thus having a multiplying effect from which their colleagues can benefit. The Auerbach Foundation supports this project to make sustainable protection against sexual abuse possible by tackling the problem at its root.
