Just imagine your child goes blind. And that is just the beginning …

The metabolic disorder NCL (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses) is a rare disease which is often not diagnosed by many doctors. The first sign – poor eyesight – often emerges when the children start school. The families affected sometimes have to watch helplessly as their child loses a little day for day: sight, mobility, speech, memory and finally life itself. Since this disorder is very rare with some 400 known cases in Germany, the treatment of the disease is not in any regular research programme. To counter this situation Dr. Frank Husemann set up the NCL Foundation in August 2002. The Foundation advocates for research in the disorder and ensures the research results are spread among the medical profession, so that the doctors are aware of the first signs of the disorder and thus reduce wrong diagnostic findings. The influence of cells of the central nervous system on the degeneration of the retina is examined and new approaches for treatment tested. With the research of the disease and new findings, the families with sick children are not left alone with their worries and cares. Thanks to the support of the Auerbach Foundation the NCL Foundation has been able to award a scholarship to a young scientist in the laboratory of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thomas Langmann.
About the Auerbach Foundation
The aim of the Auerbach Foundation is to provide help and support for people on a lasting basis.
To be able to grasp a situation we first have to understand it. And with this understanding we can, within the scope of our project funding, provide an impetus, and that is the first step in helping people to help themselves.
With its charitable and social donations the Auerbach Foundation minimises financial, spiritual, mental and physical hardship. It also seeks to create avenues for art, culture and science and, in doing so, to safeguard values, such as security and creativity.
In concrete terms this means:
- Funding people:
youth aid, aid for the old, aid for the disabled, development aid
- Funding education and socialisation
- Funding science and research
- Funding art and culture
The Auerbach Foundation was founded in 2005 by the Avira GmbH partner, Tjark Auerbach and finances its projects from donations.
Anyone buying the software Avira AntiVir Premium or Avira Premium Security Suite in the Avira online shop, makes a contribution of five euros per product to the Foundation projects.
In 2008 a total of approximately € 800,000 will go to benefit social and cultural projects.
