Innocence in Danger (IID) was founded in Paris in 1999 and is in the meantime active in several countries, also in Germany with the association IID Deutsche Sektion e.V. which was set up in 2002. The objective is to protect children from abuse and exploitation – in particular in the fields of new media, such as the Internet and mobile phones. The prevalence and circulation of mobile videos involving violence and sex or chatting in Internet forums mean that youngsters are involuntarily confronted with sexual issues. However, a current study shows that the youngsters affected tend not to seek help in the “real” world.
Because they feel quite safe in their home set-up, young people are often fairly careless when it comes to putting intimate details of themselves on the Internet. Most of them are not aware that in doing so they are exposing themselves to violent and sexual contents. Together with the kids, Innocence in Danger works out how new media can be used creatively and to their benefit, and the association also explains how risks can be avoided. Thanks to the support of the Auerbach Foundation this online counselling for young people affected and awareness training for safety in new media can be guaranteed for three years.
